About Jim Daly

Born and raised in Drinagh, Co.Cork. One of eleven children himself, seven boys and four girls. The 46 year old father of 5 currently resides in Clonakilty and is involved in many local organizations. Jim has served on Cork County Vocational Educational Committee, HSE Forum South and was Chairman of Clonakilty District Chamber of Tourism and a founding member of Clonakilty District Chamber of Commerce.

Jim started out his working life in primary and then secondary school teaching before becoming Principal of Skibbereen Gael Scoil. He also ran a thriving business in Roscarbery Co Cork after purchasing a public house and music venue at the age of 21.

He entered public life in 2004 when he was elected to Cork County Council and was then elected Cork County Mayor in 2010. He contested the 2011 General Election and took the first seat. He was appointed as Chairman of the Oireachtas Children’s Committee by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny after being re-elected to Dáil Eireann in 2016.

Current Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appointed Jim Daly as Minister of State at the Department of Health with responsibility for Mental Health and Older People.

Jim has a special interest in the Irish Language, History and Education with a particular interest in Special Needs Education. He played a leading role in the Children’s Referendum in 2012. He has a long association with the promotion of Tourism and the organising of Festivals/events in West Cork also.
