Commemorating 1916 throughout Cork

1916

We are on the cusp of what will be a most memorable weekend, when the nation commemorates the centenary of 1916.

Throughout Cork there will be dozens of events including a State Ceremonial Event on March 28th in Cork City.

I have published the list below for any of you who intend on participating over the next few weeks.

The Dromina Commemorative Committee will hold an exhibition under the working title ‘1916-2016 Who We Are’, presenting the historic writings, materials and memorabilia relating to Dromina’s involvement in the Rising. 1916 Themed Photographic Exhibition:
An exhibition of photographs of the 1966 Historic Pageant in Mallow will be shown, including photos of the local revolutionaries of the 1912/1922 period. The Proclamation and the Tricolour will also feature in the exhibition, taking place as part of the Racing Home for Easter Festival.

Boherbue Community Ceremonial Event
A community ceremonial event will take place in Boherbue in North Cork. The event commences with a full choral mass with flag feature at 11:00 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, followed by a number of related events in the square including a reading of the Proclamation; unveiling of a commemorative plaque; they laying of wreaths, the sounding of the last post, the hoisting of the Irish Flag and a 21 Gun Salute. At 13:15 in the Pearse Memorial Hall, the community 1916 photo and memorabilia display will be opened and a video documentary will be shown. Refreshment will be served for the community as well as descendants of the 22 Volunteers from Boherbue who mobilised on Easter Sunday 1916.

Inchigeela 1916 Commemorative Committee
Reenactment in Inchigeela:
A re-enactment of the Irish Volunteers that marched from Lyre, Behagh, Ballinacarraiga, and Dunmanway to Inchigeela, to be addressed by Tomás MacCurtain and Terence MacSwiney. On Easter Sunday at 12:30, the re-enactment will include a march from the Dunmanway side through the village, with a lone piper, the unveiling of a plaque in their honour and raising the flag, reading out the Proclamation and an oration by Michael Galvin.

Kealkil Commemorates 1916:
On Sunday 27th March 2016 there will be a large community commemoration of 1916. This will include a recital by the Ballingeary Pipe Band followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the Parkland. The day will also see the Raising of the Flag and traditional Irish Music and Dancing with local School children. The event commences at 12:30 p.m. and some descendents of the volunteers present in 1916 will be participating on the day.

Macroom War of Independence Commemoration Committee,
Annual Easter Rising Commemoration in Macroom:
In Macroom on Easter Sunday March 27th, commencing at 2:30 pm will be a large Easter Sunday Commemorative Event. The ceremony will include a parade led by the Cullen Pipe Band and will features relatives of the 7th/8th Battalion, including many locations from the surrounding hinterland. The event will culminate in the raising of the National Flag, the laying of a Wreath, the Last Post and a rendition of the Irish National Anthem.

Rosscarbery Remembers Easter Sunday:
A 1916 Remembrance Parade will take place in Rosscarbery on Easter Sunday. The parade will be preceded by a commemorative mass for peace and reconciliation in St. Fachtna’s Parish Church at 12 noon followed by open air traditional Irish music and dancing at the monument in the Square. The parade itself commences at 3pm (duration 2 hours) and will be followed by traditional music in local hostelries.

West Cork Maritime Heritage Company
“The Free State” – From Restoration to Exhibition:
The first fishing boat to be registered in Cork after Independence, Registration No “C 1”, was called “The Free State”. The West Cork Maritime Heritage Company plan to restore and subsequently exhibit this historic vessel. An exhibition of documents, photographs and information will take place in the Harbour Master’s Building in Baltimore.

A nationally synchronised State Ceremonial Event will take place on March 28th 2016, undertaken in conjunction with Cork City Council and Cork County Council. The event on the Grand Parade, Cork City, commences at 12 noon and will feature speeches by the Lord Mayor of Cork City and the Mayor of County Cork, a reading of the proclamation, the raising of the flag, and performances by the Army Band as well as Peadar Ó Riada and Cór Chúil Aodha.

A Civic Parade will take place in Mallow on Easter Monday, commencing at 09:30 a.m. at Mallow Courthouse. The Parade will commence with the reading of the proclamation and will be led by a colour party followed by the Thomas Davis Pipe Band, Mallow Civil Defence, Mallow Red Cross, Mallow Fire Service, Mallow Search and Rescue and the general public.

Mallow Racecourse 1916 Event:
A special day in commemoration of 1916 will take place at Mallow Racecourse on Easter Monday. The day commences at 11:15 when parade participants will mobilise near the racecourse offices, and led by a Colour Party from the Reserve Defence Forces and Thomas Davis Pipe Band, will move into the racecourse at 1145 where there will be a marquee and an exhibition where photos, documents and artefacts from the period will be on display. The morning will include the raising of the Flag and the Reading of the Proclamation as well as P. H. Pearse’s famous oration at Jeremiah O’ Donovan Rossa’s funeral, in turn followed by the Amhrán na bhfiann. On the day there will be re-enactment groups there from Mallow, Cork and Wexford present and performances by the Crossfields Céilí Band (All Ireland under 18 Champions). All who parade on the day will have free entry to the races that day, which commences at 1350. There will also be video coverage of the parade. Note that there is a free shuttle bus running in Mallow between Bowling Green behind the Hibernian Hotel, the Railway Station and the Racecourse starting at 1100. This event is for All persons from All Communities and All are very welcome.

Violent Contexts: Ireland and the Wider World
Fergal Keane, the award winning BBC Foreign Correspondent, will be giving a public lecture on “The Ethics and Obligations of Memorialising Violence – From Listowel to Visegrad” at 6pm on Friday, 1 April, at University College Cork. Keane’s investigative coverage of international war zones and humanitarian crises has been instrumental in raising global awareness for the brutality inflicted upon civilian populations during times of conflict. A witness to genocide in Rwanda, Keane has produced a book, “Season of Blood: A Rwandan Journey” (winner of the 1995 Orwell prize), as well as several candid and compassionate documentaries which detail the ferociousness and tragic consequences of ethnic violence while highlighting the need for more proactive humanitarian intervention by western powers. Keane is also the author of a number of other acclaimed books, including “Road of Bones: The Siege of Kohima 1944”, and was the presenter of the five-part BBC/RTE documentary series “The Story of Ireland”. This lecture is part of a one-day symposium entitled “Violent Contexts: Ireland and the Wider World”, which will include presentations by experts in the areas of “Torture, Violence and Memory: Ireland and Beyond”; “Women, Violence and the State”; and “Early Modern Violence and Ireland”. The symposium will be held from 11am till 5:30 in the CACSSS Seminar Room in the O’Rahilly building, and will be followed by Fergal Keane’s lecture at 6pm in the Aula Maxima. Admission is free, and no registration is required.

A new sports hall (to be appropriately called ‘Halla100′) will be opened by the President of the GAA. A number of events will take place on the day including mass in St. Nicholas’ Church at 11:30 a.m. and a ceremony commencing at 2 p.m., which will see the reading of the proclamation, the unveiling of a plaque and an exhibition intermediate hurling game between Cork and Limerick, which commences at 3 p.m.

A ceremonial event will take place in Freemount, North Cork on Sunday 3rd April. Following 10:30 a.m. mass a parade will be led by the Newmarket Pipe Band from the church to the monument. The ceremony will include the reading of the proclamation, laying of a wreath and the planting of a tree in the new Garden of Remembrance. The National Flag will be raised followed by the playing of the Last Post. Many descendents of the local No. 2 Battalion will participate at the mass and at the garden.

‘The Fighting O’Dohertys of Shamrock Terrace’:
Local-man Felix O’Doherty had started the Fianna and Volunteers in Blarney and was Captain ‘B’ (Blarney) Company, 6th Battalion, Cork Brigade I.R.A. His exploits are legendary. His sisters Ellie and Bella were members of Cumann na mBan, his brother William fought in Dublin during 1916 and another brother Private Denis O’Doherty, Irish Guards died on 27 August 1918 aged 28. All are welcome to hear the fascinating stories of this Blarney family as they are brought to life in this excellent lecture presented by historian Mr. John Mulcahy. The talk commences at 8 p.m.

Lecture: The Good Friday Agreement:
On 10th April 1998, and as agreed by Referendum on the island of Ireland, it was determined that Northern Ireland would remain part of the United Kingdom “until a majority of the people of Northern Ireland and of the Republic of Ireland wished otherwise”. This was a landmark agreement between the Irish and British Governments and a reflection on the agreement will be the topic at this lecture.
